Nestled between Austin and San Antonio on the Guadalupe River, Canyon Lake is a popular spot – and it’s actually known as the Water Recreation Capital of Texas and the “jewel of hill country.” With 130 km of clear, gentle waters, it’s easy to see why. Plan a day to fish for striped bass or rainbow trout, or perhaps you just want to spend the day swimming, hiking around the lake, or tubing. Water sports and activities are naturally the mainstays of the area but there are other things to do and discover in and around Canyon Lake.

Canyon Lake Boat Hire & Water Activities

You don’t have to own a boat to enjoy this fantastic lake. All types of watercraft are available for hire, from top of the line wakeboarding and water-skiing boats to single-person kayaks. If fishing is your thing, you can catch catfish or several kinds of bass aboard shaded fishing boats. Jet skis and waverunners are great for thrill seekers. Houseboats, canoes, inner tubes – you name it, you can find it at Canyon Lake.

Other Things to Do Near Canyon Lake

The floods of 2002 carved out the Canyon Lake Gorge below the lake’s spillway. You can witness waterfalls, marine fossils, beautiful geologic formations, and 110 million-year-old dinosaur tracks. Take a tour of the Canyon Lake Gorge – just know that it takes a little bit of forethought since only guided tours are available. The hike is three hours long and a bit strenuous, so shouldn’t be attempted if you have a health condition. It is also only open to children seven years and older. Plan your trip and book your tour here.

This Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country is just a few minutes from the lakeside, and it’s a fantastic excursion that isn’t quite as physically intensive as the gorge tour. Sitting on almost 25 acres, the museum features over 200 dinosaur tracks on 28 different trackways. Well-versed docents lead tours throughout the day. There are also local history exhibits and plenty of fossils to see. Don’t miss the gorgeous nature trail that highlights native plants. The open-air picnic area is a great place to enjoy your lunch.

Whether you are interested in Canyon Lake boat rentals, Guadalupe River tubing, ancient geologic history or dinosaurs, the Canyon Lake area is an awesome destination. Pack your sunscreen and water gear, and be prepared to make life-long memories.

2020 Misty Harbor Party Pontoon at Canyon Lake

Beautiful boat! Vanessa made everything so easy for us - the boat was ready at the dock 15 minutes in advance of our reservation, and she was available to help us dock whenever we wanted to return. The sound system was great and we loved all the table space! Life jackets and safety equipment was all included.

Brandon's boat was awesome ! ..very comfortable and just perfect for our family cruise with two grandparents, two adult children and three grandkids. Captain AJ did a great job taking us all over Canyon Lake and was very knowledgeable about all the points of interest. The grandkids loved Capt AJ for showing them the boat controls, stopping to let them swim, and chasing schools of feeding fish jumping. Capt AJ played our favorite Trop Rock music on the awesome sound system throughout the cruise.... We will definitely book Brandon's Tritoon again next time we're at Canyon Lake.

22' Berkshire Tri-toon Rental in Canyon Lake

We had an awesome time on Sandy and Scott's boat on canyon lake. It was quite clean, powerful and very comfortable. Sandy was very helpful in accommodating us at the last moment and Scott made sure our kids had the right size life jackets. The weather was beautiful and we really enjoyed our time. Would surely book with them again.

If you are looking for a great day on the water, then Brent is the one you are looking to book! Brent helped our oldest daughter (16), who had previously surfed before, increase her abilities, and gain confidence on the board. He then assisted one of our other daughters (14), who hadn't surfed before, get up and riding in no time. He was even able to use his knowledge to get our youngest daughter (12) behind the boat in a different manner on the surfboard with a smile from ear to ear. If your hesitant about having somebody else (captain) on the boat or driving it yourself, please don't. Having a captain allowed us not to worry about the lake, boat, hazards, or anything else. We were able to focus on quality family time and not miss a moment of it! I can't recommend Brent enough for family or friends no matter the age!

AJ was awesome!! We were a group of 7 Moms of college boys and AJ was fun, accommodating, safe and punctual. The boat looked brand new, had a large Yeti cooler and a brand new 2 person tube. This is the way to go folks - renting a beautiful boat with a captain! We didn’t have to worry about a thing!! Only regret was that we didn’t rent it longer! Will definitely be renting again in the future!

This boat was awesome! Brand new and so nice, especially compared to other rental options in the area. A group of 12 of us fit nicely and had a great time exploring the lake and swimming. Our boat captain was easy to communicate with and made sure we had a wonderful time out on the water! Would definitely book this boat again in the future!
